C.A.R.E. is a non-profit organization formed in 1996 by community parents and advocates of disadvantaged communities in Virginia. We are empowered by the needs of families and a vision of supporting and serving the disadvantaged.
Mission
To serve those who need support in developing resources, education, enrichment and economic stability in disadvantaged communities.
We do this through collaborative programs working with community partners. Our areas of concentration include teens, youth, parents, returning citizens and seniors. Programs we have worked to develop include the following:
- Green Valley Farmers Market
- Garden for the Community
- Gardening Apprenticeship Program (GAP)
- 4-H Afterschool Enrichment Program – Drew Community Club
- Green Valley Community Enterprises (GVCE)
- Positive Youth Development
- HOPE Community Food Program
- Family Matters – Family Engagement Warehouse
- Families Involved Together for Preventing Early Pregnancy (FIT for PEP), a teenage pregnancy prevention program
- The Discipline & Outreach for Leading Ladies & Support (DOLLS)
- Arm & Arm for returning citizens
- Nauck Youth Enterprises, life skills and workforce preparedness for youth and young adults – Learn to Earn
- Nauck Community Services Teams for community development, affordable housing and resident services
Our programs are designed to educate and enrich the lives of families and communities with hope.
C.A.R.E.’s philosophy of empowering the disadvantaged is necessary today. Our approach derives from principles of self-determination, cooperative economics and collective work.
C.A.R.E. is eager to help in creating the type of families in disadvantaged communities that are educated, engaged, informed and willing to serve.
What We Do
- Community Learning afterschool programs and summer camps that build collaborations through resources and education for those we serve with opportunities, apprenticeships, classes, workshops and retreats.
- Association of providers who we support and encourage them to support our participants.
- Resources for Parents, Seniors, Ex-Offenders and Youth to support and enrich their lives.
- Education and opportunities through programs like Dinner Chats, Community Gardens and Youth Markets at our Green Valley Farmers Market. We believe in “Teaching Men to Fish and Farm for a Living” to become self-sufficient.
- Enrich the lives of those we serve in underserved communities.
- Economic development opportunities at our Green Valley Farmers Market and Learn to Earn Program, Mobile Food and Concession Stands. We provide opportunities for employment and income through these programs in underserved communities.
- Preserving the history in communities we serve by engaging residents to learn more about how they can enrich their lives and their communities, by understanding their past.
We offer a variety of programs and activities in and around the Arlington community. We are community organizers who work to build capacity and encourage collaborations and resource sharing. Our services have included organizing and planning programs and activities for families, returning citizens and youth with a focus on teens and parenting. We provide a series of sessions to prevent teenage pregnancy and encourage positive behaviors working with at-risk youth and returning citizens to meet their needs for social and academic development. We develop and operate parent cooperatives for afterschool programs, during the summer or whenever appropriate and needed. Our activities are designed to meet the needs of the disadvantaged and underserved in communities we serve today.
